Attendance Procedures
If your child needs to be absent, please follow these procedures.

Parents please call the attendance line at (608) 845-4103 for EVERY absence OR email sc-attendance@verona.k12.wi.us

If you know that your student will be absent for more than one day, please notify the office via email or call the main office at (608) 845-4100 in order to give your child(s)'s teacher advanced time to gather any materials they may need during their absences.

If you have a upcoming vacation we request that you fill out this Vacation Form and return it to the Sugar Creek Office.
During School
If you student becomes sick during the school day.

Sugar Creek school nurse will contact the parents if the student needs to be sent home for reasons such as the following:
- Fever of 100.1 or higher
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Illness Guidelines
We appreciate your efforts in reducing the spread of illness at school. For further information please review the VASD Illness policy and the VASD Health Services website for guidance.
VASD follows the guidance from the WI Communicable Disease Chart.
While the risk of spreading a virus is lower after a fever is gone and symptoms are improving, your child may still be able to spread the virus that made them sick. You can further reduce the risk of viral spread by having your child take added precautions over the next 5 days, including wearing a mask and increasing hand hygiene.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fever-reducing medication?
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Advil) or other medications, such as Dayquil, that contain acetaminophen.
What does VASD consider a fever?
- Anything 100.0 F or greater.
Should I get a doctor’s note?
- If your child was evaluated by a medical provider, you may provide a medical note to the Ms. Espinoza, Attendance Secretary sc-attendance@verona.k12.wi.us or Kelly Borelli, Sugar Creek School Nurse at borellik@verona.k12.wi.us.

School Hours
Monday is late start
- Late start every Monday
- School starts at 9:20 a.m.
- Dismissal is at 2:20 p.m.
Tuesday - Friday
- School starts at 7:30 a.m.
- Dismissal is at 2:20 p.m.
Attendance Facts:

Missing 10% of school, or about 18 days, negatively affects a child's academic performance.

Missing two days a month is known as chronic absence.

Being absent during the first month of school may lead to chronic absence throughout the school year.

Children who miss 2-4 days of school in September, tend to miss nearly a month of school.

1 in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent from school.

Chronic absences can influence a student’s ability to read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade.
Students attendance is important not only for their learning, but routine attendance helps students achieve greatness.
In accordance with school board policy and Wisconsin State law, parents/guardians are allowed to excuse their student for acceptable reasons for not more than 10 days per school year. Excused students are required to complete the missed school work.
Additional absences will be counted as unexcused. Regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused, missing school can significantly impact student learning.
Attendance Letters

Warning - The first notice will be sent via email after 3+ absences that are unexcused.

First Letter - The first letter will be sent after a student accumulates 5+ absences.

Second Letter - The second letter will be sent after a student accumulates 10+ absences.

Third Letter - The third letter will be sent with any additional absence (11+) and families will be expected to meet with the Social Worker and Principal to make a proactive attendance plan.
