Imagination Fair
Imagination and Author Fair has started!
Science Event Projects
-
Hypothesis-Driven Project: This type of project asks a question about something that interests you based on what you see and what you learn through research. When scientists do this type of project, they develop a hypothesis, which is a guess based on what they think will happen. Next, scientists gather materials, perform experiments and write down their results. Scientists use their results to judge their hypothesis. They base their opinion on what their observations tells them.
-
Descriptive Project: This type of project describes and explains an interesting natural event, for example the relationship between electricity and magnetism, how an airplane flies, how the blood system works, or how a fossil was discovered and how its age and species were determined. A descriptive project should be more than a display of a collection or model; it needs to answer the question of how something works, how something was discovered or why something happens.
Types of Author Event Projects
There are three categories of writing projects: Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction. Please submit writing for one of these categories. All entries should be legible, use good grammar and spelling, and be your best work. The deadline for submissions is Monday February 24th.
- Poetry: This includes expressive, thoughtful writing in any poetic form. Submissions may be prose poems, acrostic poems, collections of haiku, or rhyming, classical forms of poetry such as couplets or sonnets.
- Fiction: This category includes all creative writing about fictional characters. Submissions could be comics, short stories or storybooks.
- Creative Nonfiction and Autobiographies: This category encompasses writing that is factually accurate, but written creatively. Submitted projects could be autobiographies or personal essays, family histories or stories as well as science or nature writings.

FAQs
Do we need to do a classroom science project?
No, this is optional. However, we encourage you to consider doing a classroom project tied to something you are already doing in class. It can be an informational board or follow the scientific method. Students and parents love having the boards on display at the evening event. Plus, this is one of our best ways to get every student involved in the Imagination Fair. You can pick up your classroom board with the student board pick up on Feb. 10th.
Can I register my whole class for the author event?
Yes. But, please make sure you notify parents directly if you do this and pass along Imagination Fair information such as due date information about the evening event. We frequently have parents who get confused when they did not sign their child up for the Author Event, but the student is in it.
Can I find out who registered from my class?
Yes. You will have an email from me by February 7th with the list of students from your class who are registered. For those registered in a group project you will also know who is in their group.
Will all students be able to come see science projects during the day on March 7th?
Yes. You will receive a google form around March 1 to sign up to bring your class to view science projects.
How will science judging work during the school day on March 7th?
We are going to have all judging done during the school day again this year, without the need for student participation. Ribbons will simply be placed on the students projects for them to view at the evening event.
I want to help! How do I sign up?
Here is the link to the Sign Up Genius! We would particularly appreciate your help with set up right after school on Thursday & Friday March 6th & 7th. If you are looking for a good way to help and see your students at the evening event there will be 30 minute slots for things like greeting, watching over the science projects and handing out pizza. https://www.signupgenius.com/
