Battle of Books

Battle of the Books is a statewide reading challenge for interested 4th and 5th graders organized by WEMTA (Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association).

What does Battle of the Books involve at Sugar Creek?

  • A book list for students to read is put together by the state Battle of the Books committee. VASD uses districtwide material selection criteria to finalize the books to be used in the VASD competition held at VAHS each February. Students will read as many of the books as possible. (Ms. Vitela has copies of the books reserved for participants.)
  • Students work in teams of 3-4 to practice answering questions about the books, discuss and share ideas, read, as well as participate in activities linked to the books.
  • A culminating district-battle at VAHS in February, which consists of teams answering questions to find the team who knows the books best! One team will move on to an online state competition at the end of February.
