Family Involvement

Sugar Creek Newsletter

Hello Families,

The period of life when you have a child in elementary school is fleeting, and will be over before you know it. In fact, the American Time Use Survey of 2021 estimated that parents spend 25% less time each day with their children when they leave elementary school and become middle schoolers! Please accept our offer to be a part of this space, Sugar Creek, during this special time in your child’s life.

If you're interested and able, there are a variety of ways you can be present or be a support of your child’s education and school. If you have other ideas or suggestions, let us know.

Mr. Todd Brunner, Principal

Mrs. Kirstin Houghan, Associate Principal

Field Trip Fundraiser

Kids LOVE field trips, and they can be incredible learning experiences. Did you know: at Sugar Creek our field trips are free to kids? Our fundraiser to help support field trips at Sugar Creek raised over $$6,000 last year!

If you or someone you know might like to help, so that we can continue to keep these opportunities free to all students, you can either send a check to our main office marked “Sugar Creek Field Trip Fund” or you may use this QR code:

Business Sponsors needed for the Fun Run

Do you or someone you know own a business OR know of a business that would be interested in being a Fun Run sponsor? Please share this link with them. Sponsors help make our Fun Run possible!

School supplies, classroom / staff supplies

We strive to keep our supply lists barebones, to save our families money. One way we are able to do so is because of the kindness of donations from families. If you want to support your teacher by giving more than the basics, please check out our easy-to-use Amazon wishlist. You can even select to have donations shipped directly to Sugar Creek!

Book donations for kids

Here you can see a recent donation of children’s books from Sugar Creek family the O'Leary's. As a school that puts thousands upon thousands of books into the hands and homes of our students each year, donations like this are SO meaningful.

Donations can be dropped off in our office anytime - we have a book cart right inside our office door. Thank you!

The Sugar Creek Endowment Fund

We have an endowment fund with the Madison Community Foundation, which was established to continue “to serve the mission and vision of the Sugar Creek Elementary School Community.”

See here for more information. Donations can be sent or dropped off at our front office. Thank you!

Time

We’d LOVE to have YOU be a volunteer at school!

In order to be a classroom or field trip volunteer, you have to complete a background check through our school district. Please don’t delay - doing so now is not too soon!
* Once completed, you will be added to VASD’s approved volunteer list. Teachers can only have individuals on this district-approved list be classroom volunteers. Background checks are good for two years.

Support our Parent Teacher Organization

PTO stands for Parent Teacher Organization. This group of parents and teachers finds all sorts of ways to help make our school a great place. The weekly PTO newsletter will be linked in your child’s teacher newsletter, and through the course of the year you’ll see ideas and needs that they have. Please consider joining our efforts and helping us!

Library

If you are interested in helping our librarian Ms. Vitela with shelving books, making bulletin boards, creating displays, and other bookish projects, please reach out to her at vitelaj@verona.k12.wi.us to share your availability and what you are most interested in helping with. She will reach out to potential volunteers starting the week of August 25th.

Health and Wellness Committee

We have a great team of staff and family members that meet monthly to plan and support steps we take to support the health and wellness of all. This year, our team is focussing on strengthening social-emotional health & learning and supporting staff well-being. If you’d like to help, let Mr. Brunner know at brunnert@verona.k12.wi.us.

Meanwhile, here’s a flier to learn more about so much of the work we do!
