Please see the message below as we wrap up the 2025-2026 school year. Every day with your kids is such a joy!

As part of our well-advertised large May event, Dia del Nino, Sugar Creek held a K-2nd and a 3rd - 5th performance of the fabulous local musician, Angela Puerta! A native of Columbia, her music was a hit! |

Uriel, pictured here with his art teacher, Ms. Ann Kruse, will represent Sugar Creek this year as our school’s youth art representative to the Superintendent and the Verona Area School Board. He is pictured here with a sea horse he made. (Look closely at his artwork: he happily pointed out to us that the sea horse hid a piece of candy below, in the seaweed, to eat later!) |

We were lucky enough to have Beni Daiko, a local Japanese Taiko Drumming Group, visit us this month to perform! The kids loved the performances and were so amazed at all the different noises the drums could make. |

Sugar Creek has the largest elementary YMCA program in Dane County, and … still has a wait list. Our site supervisors are very good and have worked here for years - in fact, some since we were at our old school in the 2010s. After a recent meeting between our school administrators and Dane County YMCA West, they agreed to increase their numbers by 20% for 2026-27! |

On our back playground we had the space and ability to install a volleyball net. From this recent picture at a Fifth Grade recess, you can see it has been very popular! |

Did you enjoy the way our art and music departments come together for a shared theme each year? Our Art Show “Luminosity of the Deep” and our Spring Concert “Songs in the Key of Sea” shared an ocean theme that was really appealing to kids and teachers alike!
We are incredibly proud of our art teachers, Ms. Kruse and Ms. Laxton; and music teachers, Ms. Kyle and Ms. Xavier. Each year they put in so much time and energy into making these spring-time events a wonderful celebration that inspires the abilities, joy, and success of our students.
Pictured here you see how on the day of the event, Kimmy, Amilia and Hanna (students in Ms. Strand’s Fifth Grade class) presented each of these dedicated teachers bouquets on behalf of the students of Sugar Creek. |

Sugar Creek has a growing school endowment fund with the Madison Community Foundation. Recently, thirteen 5th graders met, with support from Mr. Brunner, Ms. Houghan and Ms. Schuiltz, to decide how to use some recent proceeds from last year and the kids were so excited to find ways to give back to our school. They shared and considered ideas in small groups, then met as a large group to review their suggestions. There was a clear winner…which they themselves will announce at their Promotion ceremony in June! Thank you to students (L to R): Alex, Oliver, Cay, Sean, Sammy, Evan, Zach, Clara, Sofia, Danna, Lily, Analia, and Camilla. Should you or someone you know wish, please consider supporting our school’s endowment fund. The money goes right back to making our school an even more wonderful place for kids. |

Under Ms. Houghan’s guidance, we have started a long-term partnership with UW-Madison to host cohorts of their students who need thorough, professional field experience in a diverse school setting. A thank you to this semester’s teachers who hosted these university students: Mr. Beirowski, Mr. Borchardt, Ms. Castellanos, Ms. Rivera, and Ms. Maier.

Each year Sugar Creek receives support from our PTO’s Fun Run and a grant from Epic to help support student activities. One of those activities is Tri4Schools. This year, we have 29 athletes participating! On May 16th they participated in the Waunakee Triathlon, with proceeds benefiting Sugar Creek. |

Each year, we hold a Fifth Grade Promotion to honor our departing students. This is a family event - no reservations necessary - and a dress-up occasion for the students. It will be held on Wednesday, June 10th, at 1 p.m. in our gymnasium.
We created the kids-only all-school Clap Out because we are unable to facilitate pulling hundreds of siblings out of their classes and recesses to attend this brief ceremony. Further, as the last full day of school, many classes have some special things occurring in their classrooms. |

In the coming months, we will share more about our school’s enrollment, budget, and staffing plans for 2026-27, once we have the necessary information from our Central Office.
Meanwhile, and directly related to this, if your family will be moving away please let us know, so we can help ensure a smooth transition process to your child’s new school; and if you have a new neighbor with children, be sure they contact VASD’s Registrar ASAP at 845-4301 so their children can receive the free public education to which they are legally entitled. |
